Easter in Positano
Discovering the sacred rituals of the holy week in Positano
Easter in Positano is a mystic moment: come see the ancient rituals of the holy week in the Amalfi Coast.
Whoever may find themselves in Positano from holy Thursday to holy Friday will be astonished and remain shocked: the town is only illuminated by the flares and candles; throughout the streets and alleys, walking at a slow drum pace are men in black robes, completely covering their faces with a pointy hood with only eye gaps.
Each bringing in hand symbols of the Passion of Christ: crosses, nails, and the crown of thorns. At a certain point, coming from the end of the procession, is the Gregorian quire singing the Miserere. The full moon will be shining on this night.
The holy week processions in Positano are an ancient ritual, brought from the conquistadores in the Spanish domain, they are still today a very seen event: those who work far from Positano often return home just to participate in the processions.
The austerity and the mystery fade away once Easter Sunday comes along. Tables are filled with local pastry specialties including the famous ‘casatiello’.
